Ontario Truck Driving licenses

To become a truck driver with a Class A license in Ontario, you need to be 18 years or older,

hold a valid Ontario license (other than G1, G2, M, M1 or M2), as well as completing:

  • A medical examination
  • An eye test
  • A written driver’s test
  • Mandatory entry-level training

Your training will require exercises in the classroom and in the truck. The first day of training usually sees students take an air brake endorsement class to gain a “Z” endorsement on your license. This is essential for operating commercial trucks and required to complete your studies.

Once you pass your ministry road exam, you will gain a full A Class license in Ontario!

With a full A Class license, you can drive the following:

  • A car or light truck covered by a Class G license
  • Heavy trucks covered by the Class D truck license
  • Any vehicle covered under a restricted Class A truck license

Note: You cannot drive a bus with passengers with a Class A license.

Always consult each province’s government website for information regarding truck driver license requirements. Additionally, license classes may differ; for example, Ontario uses letters (Class A) while Quebec uses numbers (Class 1).
